Roses, Lakes and Volcanos in Ecuador

6 hours +/-

Tour Description

Driving north towards the Imbabura (the lakes) Province, we will head to Hacienda la Compañia. This hacienda was originally built by the Jesuits and belonged to them until King Charles III of Spain expelled this religious order from Spain and all of the colonies, Ecuador included. The hacienda now belongs to the Jarrin family, who has opened it to the public. This is a perfect spot to discover and learn about Ecuadorian roses, one of the country’s most important exports.

Our next stop will be Cuicocha Crater Lake, which lies at the foot of the extinct volcano Cotocachi (4968 m) in the Western Cordillera in the province of Imbabura. This area is home to several mostly dormant volcanoes, like Mojanda, Imbabura and Cayambe. The past eruptions of these volcanoes contributed to the fertile valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the Andean highland.

Next, we will visit the small town of Cotacachi, a village which is well known for its hand-crafted leather products. Methods of tanning, stretching and molding the leather skins have been passed down through the generations and perfected into an art.
