Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Panama - Darién

After breakfast at your hotel, you will depart on the Panamerican Higway toward Darién. In Agua Fria, you will stop at the SENAFRONT (Servicio Nacional de Fronteras) checkpoint where your passport and belongings will be checked. Lunch will be included in a traditional inn, run by local citizens. Following lunch, you will travel towards Santa Fe or Meteti. This part of the country is underdeveloped, and your hotel room will be very basic, with water, electricity, and air conditioning. During dinner, you will receive further explanation as to what to expect in the following days in the majestic Darién Jungle.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 2

Hike to Naipe River camp

After breakfast, we will transfer to Puerto Quimba, where we will take a boat to Garachiné, using safe and reliable local transportation. As we cross the San Miguel Gulf, we are likely to be escorted by dolphins. Upon arrival in Garachiné, we will board an ATV that will take us to “Calle Larga”, where we will begin our hike. We will hike for about an hour to the Cerro Naipe community, where we will have a rest, and then will head deeper into the rainforest, until we arrive at our camping site. Our hike will take about six hours, so we will prepare a rewarding dinner at our camp, and we can take a refreshing dip in the Naipe River. We will sleep in hammocks set along the banks of the Naipe River.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3

Hike to Playa Muerto

After an early breakfast, we will embark on an 11-mile hike, stopping along the way for lunch at one of the rest stops. The trail traverses some of the least explored areas of the Darién Jungle, crossing creeks and rivers. You will need to pay close attention as portions of the trail will be challenging. Around 5:30 pm, we will arrive at Playa Muerto, where the community will welcome you warmly. They will provide you with a delicious dinner, and a comfortable place to sleep and recharge.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4

Playa Muerto

After breakfast prepared by the women in the Playa Muerto Embera community, you will have the day to enjoy this piece of paradise. We will explore the beach along the Pacific Ocean, and hike to a viewpoint with a spectacular view. You can also swim at a beautiful waterfall, where the children of the community often play. At noon, we will return to the community for lunch, and then explore the community itself. You may even choose to take part in the volleyball, basketball, or football games played by the young people. Before dinner, the women of the community will demonstrate their art of basket weaving, passed on from generation to generation. If you choose, you can purchase one as a memento of your time spent with the Playa Muerto Community. Be sure to enjoy the beautiful sunset in this wonderful place.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 5

Return

All good things must come to an end, so after breakfast, we will walk to a small port where a boat will take us back to Puerto Quimba. The boat ride will take from two to three hours, and from there, you will take the bus back to Panama City, arriving in the late afternoon.
