Friday - Exploring the Panama Canal – Atlantic and Pacific

Exploring the Panama Canal – Atlantic and Pacific Side - include lunch. Panama is home to the Panama Canal which is one of the most amazing engineering feats with the 1914 Panama Canal and the 2016 New Locks and expansion. Explore both locks in one day. Your day will start early with the train trip across the isthmus of Panama. On arrival in Colon you will visit the Agua Clara Locks where you can visit the expansion of the new locks built to accommodate the “post panama” ships. The engineering behind these new locks was built in just under 10 years and has made Panama even more important to the shipping world. The new locks operate similarly to the original but use water retaining pools to minimize water loss and a rolling gate from chamber to chamber. They also eliminated the locomotives, and utilize tugs instead. After this tour you will head back toward the Pacific side with a stop for lunch. Following lunch you will head to Miraflores Locks to see the original locks still in operation. This includes the entrance to the Museum, a movie on the new canal, and access to the viewing locations. From the observation deck, you can watch as ships cross the Panama Canal and the fascinating process as they pass through the locks.

The Embera are one of seven indigenous tribes in Panama, and this tour will give you a fascinating look into their way of life. You will be transferred from your hotel to the shores of the Chagres River, where you will board a Piragua (dug-out canoe) and take a short ride up the river accompanied by an Embera guide. When you arrive at their community, you will be welcomed by tribal members dressed in their traditional clothing and escorted past their huts into the community area. The chief of the village will talk about the history of the tribe, their origins and their lifestyle. The Embera will gladly demonstrate their native dances, their beautiful craftwork and their cooking skills. You will be served a delicious lunch of fried plantains and tilapia fish, one of their traditional favorites. You will also be able to shop for their handiworks. If you are in good shape and can hike, you can take a short hike over rocky terrain to a crystal clear waterfall for a refreshing swim and then return by boat to the bus and back to your hotel around 4:00pm.

Hiking shoes that can get wet are recommended.

We recommend wearing your swimsuit under your clothes and taking a towel.

The drive to El Valle takes about 1 ½ hours, and once there, you will be able to experience much that this beautiful town has to offer. You will visit the crafts market, which has a diverse offering of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, as well as crafts handmade by the villagers themselves. You will also enjoy a walk through the rainforest for a visit to the El Chorro Macho Waterfall (The Male Waterfall), a spectacular 35-meter waterfall with a natural lagoon at its base, or visit the Nispero Zoo and Nursery to learn about the animals of the region.
