Since 1914 the Panama Canal has proved to be one of the most traveled water passages in the world. And since that time, the tremendous growth rate of canal traffic resulted in the expansion project being slated to be completed sometime mid to late 2015. The new third set of locks currently being constructed offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the most magnificent engineering marvels in the world...past, present, and future.

Package extension options are available for those that wish to extend their trip beyond 6 days.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Panama City. Transfer to Panama City hotel and check in.

Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer from to Corozal Railroad Station for a train trip to the Atlantic Side. You will be met at the Colon railroad station, transferring to the Gatun Viewing Pavilion overlooking the Gatun Locks excavation. Enjoy an early lunch. After a visit to the Gatun Viewing Pavilion, travel to the ruins of Portobelo and the Church with the Black Christ then return to Panama City. Itinerary subject to change due to scheduling.

Day 3

You will start your day with a visit to the ruins of Panama’s first capital, known as Old Panama or Panama La Vieja. This city was founded in 1519 as the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific Ocean. Spanish expeditions to conquer other South American colonies left from here and returned with vast quantities of gold, attracting the attention of pirates like Henry Morgan. When this notorious pirate looted the city in 1671, the whole city was destroyed by fire, but the ruins of several impressive structures remain to this day. You will see the ruins of the Spanish fortress, as well as a museum detailing what life was like in Old Panama. Next, you will travel to Casco Antiguo, the Colonial City, for a walking tour to explore the historic center of the modern capital going through restoration as a UNESCO site. Following lunch, you will head through the former “Canal Zone” to see the Miraflores Locks visitor center. This includes the entrance to the Museum, a movie on the new canal, and access to the viewing locations. From the observation deck, you can watch as ships cross the Panama Canal and the fascinating process as they pass through the locks. Lastly as time allows – optional extension - you will visit the Biodiversity Museum where you will learn the history of how Panama came to be. The Museum Design is by Frank Gehry. Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the boarding site of the Partial Transit of the Panama Canal. The transit will go through Miraflores Locks, Pedro Miguel Locks, and the famous "Culebra Cut" (Gaillard Cut). Lunch will be served while on the transit. Afterwards, return to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 5

Following breakfast, transfer to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort and enjoy a free day to explore Gamboa and the Rainforest. (Optional tours available)

Day 6

Breakfast at Gamboa. Today is a free day for you to enjoy the rainforest. We can suggest the Jungle Boat Tour on Gatun Lake or a day trip on the Chagres River to visit the Embera Indians. The Embera Indians are an integral resource in the region with their vast knowledge of the Chagres River and the Panama Canal. Pricing for additional tours available upon request.

Day 7

Transfer from your hotel to Tocumen Airport for your return flight home or choose to extend your stay with extension tours and accommodations.
