Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Upon arrival at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre Airport, you will be greeted by our helpful guide. The guide will serve as a translator, help with luggage, and assist with the private transfer to your hotel.

Accommodations in Quito.

Day 2

After an early morning breakfast, we will depart towards the city center of downtown Quito, or Centro Histórico, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

We will start with a panoramic view of Alameda Park and the Basilica, followed by a walk down the street of the Seven Crosses. The trip will continue with a walking tour, starting at Independence Square. From here, we will visit the presidential palace, the main cathedral, the gold-plated La Compañía Church, San Francisco Church and San Francisco Plaza.

Around midday, the tour will head north to the equator for a trip to the monument at the Middle of the World. You may choose to visit either the Ethnographic or the Inti Ñan Museums, both located near the site of the monument. Along the way we will stop for a traditional Ecuadorian lunch.

After seeing these incredible sites, the tour will head back to Quito, where you will return to your hotel.

Accommodations in Quito.

Breakfast and lunch are included.

Day 3

At the agreed time, transfer to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos. The flight from Quito to the Galapagos is approximately two and a half hours. Upon arrival at Baltra, travelers pass through an airport inspection point to insure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands and to pay the park entrance fee of $100 (unless prepaid), and $10 for the INGALA card which is a required identity card. Guides will meet you, collect your luggage, and escort you on the short bus ride to the harbor. Motorized rafts, called ‘Pangas’ will transport you to your cruise ship and our crew will welcome you onboard. After departure and lunch, the first island visit is made, to North Seymour.

This is an uplifted (as opposed to volcanic) island and so is generally flat and strewn with boulders. There are good nesting sites here for a large population of magnificent frigate birds. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the more open areas and swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges. Despite the tremendous surf that can pound the outer shore, sea lions haul themselves onto the beach and can be found bodysurfing.

Lunch and dinner are included.

Day 4

In the morning, we will cruise to El Barranco. The visitor site of El Barranco is located in the southern part of Darwin Bay on Genovesa Island. We can take a two hour tour over a 1.5 km trail which is on volcanic rock. The youngest area of the island, from a geological point of view, lies in this area. The cliffs located in the south are composed of very fragile lava. The natural erosion that has occurred in these lava flows has become the ideal place for nesting Storm Petrels. You can see two species of petrels that nest in cavities and holes in the lava. One of its main predators is the short-eared owl. The red-footed booby nests only in the outer islands of the archipelago, Punta Pitt, Gardner (Floreana), Wolf, Darwin and Genovesa. Also present on this island is the masked booby. During the “panga rides” along the cliffs, fur sea lions can be seen as well as several species of seabirds.

In the afternoon, we will arrive at Darwin Bay. This bay was created when the crater of this island collapsed below sea level. The wet landing is on a beautiful white coral sandy beach. This is a favorite island for birdwatchers: red footed-booby, masked boobies, wandering tattlers, lava gulls, whimbrels, yellow-crowned, and black-crowned lava herons, and yellow warblers can be seen in the area. Walking along a trail, we will climb gradually to the edge of the cliff, seeing Red-Foots nesting in the Mangrove trees below. Bird watching includes sightings of sharp-beaked finches, large cactus and ground finches, Galapagos doves, and swallow-tailed gulls. Reaching the end of the trail at the cliff's edge offers an incredible view of the island and the many birds living there.

Day 5

In the morning, we will arrive at Santa Cruz Island. Plazas is located at the east end of the island and forms part of two islands known as Islas Plazas. Despite its small size, some of the most interesting and outstanding species of the Galapagos are found here. The iguanas found here are smaller than those found on other islands. Throughout the island are several hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. These are unique, recognizable at first glance by their black/gray color, with a land iguana's crest, but the face and tail of the marine iguana. The large population of iguanas is due to the presence of tuna, their favorite food. Swallow tailed gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other sea birds like Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds, and brown pelicans.

In the afternoon, we will visit the island of Santa Fe. Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, this island was formed from an uplift instead of being of volcanic origin, which is why it is mostly flat. There are some theories that this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. Santa Fe is the home of a number of endemic species like the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land Iguanas of the islands. After disembarking in the beautiful and clear waters you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail many salt bushes can be seen as well giant Prickly pear cactus - gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. There are great chances that you can snorkel with playful sea lions and tropical fishes.

We will continue to the formidable Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, with its wonderful panoramic view of Cuzco. You will marvel at the impressive Inca masonry, especially the monumental zig-zag stone walls slotted together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Finally visit the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Koricancha complex, a Dominican church and convent built on the foundations of the Incas’ principal religious building, dedicated to the worship of the sun.

Day 8

Today you will enjoy a full-day tour of the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a magical place as its name suggests: a winding trail of lush, green slopes lining the Urubamba River. Discover everything from colorful markets to fascinating architectural remains. You will visit Chincheros where you will see the colorful local people in their traditional costumes. The settlers live in almost intact Inca constructions, in the same place where their ancestors lived and formed the largest and most prosperous civilization in America. In the afternoon we continue to the town of Ollantaytambo, one of the oldest continuously occupied settlements in the Americas. Climb the steep stone steps up to the imposing fortress at the top of the mountain for breathtaking views down the valley, and admire the huge monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun. Finally, you will be taken to the train station for your trip to Aguas Calientes.

Upon arrival, your guide will meet you and will give you some details for your tour of the next day.
