Travel Itinerary

Day 1

You are met by our representative at the airport and brought to your hotel in Managua. Rest of the day at leisure.

Managua, Nicaragua's capital, is home to almost two million inhabitants and is easily the largest city in Nicaragua. Managua has a lot to offer its visitors: theaters, restaurants, night clubs, bars, and cinemas to name a few. At Roberto Huembes market, you can experience an authentic Nicaraguan street market and buy well made souvenirs and handicrafts. Natural reserves and beach destinations are also within an arm's reach - within the city you can enjoy the views of the Tiscapa Lagoon (of volcanic origin) where you can even do a canopy tour. Just outside the city, the Montibelli bird and butterfly reserve and the Chocoyero national reserve are also recommended. Furthermore, Pochomil and Montelimar, located only an hour away, offer some excellent beaches.

Day 2

In the morning you are brought to the northwestern part of Nicaragua, Hato Nuevo, near El Viejo, an idyllic off the beaten path destination.

El Viejo plays host to one of the country's most revered churches, actually declared as a national sanctuary. Built in the 17th century, the basilica of the immaculate conception of Mary with its antique decor and historical artifacts is a colonial church definitely worth a visit. Beside the magnificent Basilica there is the Natural Reserve Padre Ramos which is a mangrove forest of considerable size which houses rare wildlife. For adventure seekers, the Cosiguina Peninsula is an area of outstanding beauty, and offers a chance to climb up the volcano with stunning views over the Gulf of Fonseca, Honduras and El Salvador. And for those with a lower desire for the thrill factor, there are many quiet beaches close by for some sun and chill time.

Day 3

Today you can choose from several options: you can go kayaking in the mangroves of Padre Ramos, horseback riding in the vicinity of the hotel or you can climb one of Nicaragua´s most beautiful volcanoes, Volcán Cosigüina.

Day 4

Early in the morning you leave the unspoilt beauty of Cosigüina for the vibrant colonial city of León. In the afternoon you do a tour of the natural reserve of Juan Venado. Juan Venado Natural Reserve is an impressive mangrove sanctuary, and a well-kept secret among tourists. The beauty of this remote area is unprecedented. Transfer from León to the Pacific bay of Las Peñitas where you will board a motorboat towards the island. As you wind your way between mangroves, make sure to keep an eye out for diverse species of bird and aquatic wildlife that inhabit the area. You will reach a place where you can cross over to the secluded Pacific beach side of the island (only a few hundred meters) and enjoy a private walk or swim. If you are really lucky, you will even encounter crocodiles and the impressive Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (in season: August-February) on your way.

Breakfast included.

Day 5

After breakfast you are transferred to the beautiful Laguna de Apoyo.

Laguna de Apoyo, famed to be Nicaragua's cleanest swimming hole, is a perfect respite for any traveler. Measuring 200 meters in depth at its lowest point, it is the deepest point in Central America but stays surprisingly warm because of the thermal activity below the surface. Most visitors come to the lake to swim in the warm blue waters, spend the afternoon with a book, or to soak up some rays on the shore. While easily accessible by car, the lake is surprisingly underdeveloped. Visitors can feel like they are the only ones there. Toucans, hummingbirds, howler and white-faced monkeys are a common sight for those who choose to stay for a day or two. The lake is an ideal place to rest, relax, swim, kayak, and recharge.

Day 6

You will be brought to Nicaragua´s most elegant city, Granada. No visit to Granada is complete without a tour of the city’s beautiful historic center and what better way than on a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Founded by the Spanish in 1524, Granada is considered to be one of the oldest colonial cities in the Western hemisphere. On this privately guided walking/carriage tour you will explore the San Francisco Church and neighboring San Francisco Convent built in 1529. Now functioning as a museum, the Convent is home to an impressive collection of pre-Columbian art. Continue on to the beautiful Merced Church where you will have the opportunity to climb to the top of the bell tower and take in spectacular views over the city, Lake Nicaragua, and the Mombacho Volcano. Next, head over to La Polvora Fortress to learn the history of the old fortress and walk through its immaculate courtyard. Finish your tour in the oldest part of the city where you will visit the Xalteva Church and the old city walls. Throughout the excursion your guide will provide you with an informative and unique perspective of this beloved colonial city.

Day 7

Today you will visit the Mombacho Volcano where you take a nice walk around the crater. You have the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the beauty of Granada or its nearby Isleteas.

Situated in a beautiful cloud forest and home to a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife, a visit to Mombacho Volcano is a great way for any nature lover to spend the day. Drive to the top (1150 meters) of the volcano in a 4x4 vehicle. After a quick trip to the scientific station, explore this impressive volcano on a guided walk. The well-kept Crater Trail (1.5 km) leads you around the crater through dense cloud forest. Pass by several fumaroles and enjoy spectacular views overlooking Granada, Las Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and the Masaya Volcano. Be sure to keep an eye out for the howler and white face monkeys as well as the endemic Mombacho salamander.

For an added cost, you can extend this tour with an adventurous and adrenaline-packed canopy tour. See nature from a bird's eye perspective; zip through the treetops as you go from platform to platform ranging in height from 10 to 100 feet above the canopy floor. All guests are accompanied by an expert instructor and provided with high quality equipment, including helmets, pulleys, and gloves. This tour is a safe and fun adventure for the whole family.
