Highlights of Nicaragua

9 Days / 8 Nights

Package Overview

This nine day trip combines some of Nicaragua´s top destinations: the majestic colonial cities of León and Granada and the island of Ometepe, whose beauty was admired by the great writer Mark Twain: "Out of the midst of the beautiful Lake Nicaragua spring two magnificent pyramids, clad in the softest and richest green, all flecked with shadow and sunshine, whose summits pierce the billowy clouds. They look so isolated from the world and its turmoil, so tranquil, so dreamy, so steeped in slumber and eternal repose."

Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Managua International Airport – Managua

After arriving in Managua you will be welcomed by our guide and transferred to your hotel in Managua.

Day 2

Managua – Cerro Negro – León

Breakfast at the hotel. While most of the touristic focus in Nicaragua is aimed towards Granada, the city of León is a cultural-historical attraction that really deserves a visit as well. Today you will visit the Cerro Negro, Nicaragua´s youngest volcano, It consists of a gravelly basaltic cinder cone, which contrasts greatly with the surrounding green hillsides, and gives rise to its name, which means Black Hill.

Climbing the Cerro Negro is not like any other volcano in Nicaragua. The volcano is only about 500 feet high, but the ascent is steep and tough. There is no paved trail; just a natural path along a rim that leads to the top. The ascent takes about one hour to the top, and although it requires some effort the super views are certainly rewarding. The absence of trees provides fantastic scenery, and upon reaching the top, visitors have a 360 degree view of the area. The crater - often emitting smoke and gas - can be observed from above, and the crater rim leads to the other side where the imposing volcanic chain can be seen. You will enjoy the view before starting the descent, which is a whole other adventure by itself. One of the volcano's slopes is too steep to climb - but consequently great for a fast descent! Instead of large rocks, this side only has volcanic sand, providing a great surface for running downhill. This thrilling experience takes less than ten minutes before reaching the bottom, but for the less athletic hikers it is also possible to walk more slowly while again enjoying the superb views. Alternatively, you can use a wooden board to go downhill, much like snowboarding down a mountain but now on a volcanic slope! In any way, the Cerro Negro provides a unique and intense experience that can be enjoyed by anybody in fair shape. Activity do not included in the cost – Price per person US$35.00

In the afternoon we will do the city tour of León, we will visit the museums, art galleries, colorful colonial, beauty architecture, and imposing cathedral, and the facades of its churches.
